INFO

Hole was a Grammy-nominated American alternative rock band that formed in Los Angeles in 1989 and disbanded in 2002. The band was fronted by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Courtney Love, who co-founded Hole with songwriter/lead guitarist Eric Erlandson. Hole achieved considerable commercial success. Their second album, Live Through This, was critically acclaimed and regarded as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s,[1], as well as their most notable work.

Hole's style of alternative rock was initially influenced heavily by punk rock, no wave and noise rock, though as they progressed they began to incorporate elements of grunge and pop rock into their sound.[2] Hole were reported to have been reforming in 2009, however, due to a contract signed in 2002 by Love and Erlandson, no reunion can take place without mutual involvement. An acrimonious argument between Love and Erlandson about the use of the name has been reported. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hole_(band))

Pretty on the Inside (1991)

http://991.com/newgallery/Hole-Pretty-On-The-Ins-337852.jpg

Pretty on the Inside is Hole's first studio album, released in September 1991 by Caroline Records.

The album was recorded at Music Box Studios in Los Angeles in March 1991, with Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon and Gumball frontman Don Fleming in charge of production. A month prior, in Fun City Studios in Los Angeles, Hole had also worked with Gordon and recorded "Drown Soda", an outtake which would later appear as the b-side on the Teenage Whore single. The studio work took only four days in total.

The album features a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides, Now" (credited as "Clouds") and two noise suites, "Sassy" and "Starbelly" as well as an overall strong punk rock influence. The only single lifted from the album was Teenage Whore, which went into number 1 in the U.K. indie charts in late 1991. Though no promo video was made for "Teenage Whore", a music video was created for Garbadge Man, though the song itself was not released as a single . Drummer Caroline Rue left Hole after the band's 1991 tours to promote "Pretty on the Inside". Bassist Jill Emery also left in March 1992.

Pretty on the Inside was greatly influenced by noise rock artists, most notably Sonic Youth. The Trouser Press Guide to 90's Rock says, "Pretty on the Inside [is] a surly milkshake of broken rock shards, ... their obvious attempt to make a Sonic Youth record doesn't quash the original impulses." From the artistic misspellings of song titles ["Garbadge Man"] to the lyric collage on the inner sleeve and the abrasive, abstract guitar noises on the songs, Pretty on the Inside reveals the band's fascination with the New York no Wave art and music scene of the 80's."

The album was an underground success, especially in the United Kingdom. It has sold 204,000 copies in the U.S. and over 400,000 copies worldwide.

My Body, the Hand Grenade (1997)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000003SWL.jpg

My Body, the Hand Grenade is a compilation album by Hole that includes b-sides, demo recordings, live songs, and other rarities and unreleased tracks by the band. Most of the songwriting credits go to Hole, although the BMI website shows that most of the songs were written just by Courtney Love and Eric Erlandson, except "Retard Girl", written by Love; "Old Age", written by Kurt Cobain (Krist Novoselic confirmed that "Old Age" was indeed "a Nirvana song" in an interview with UK music newspaper Melody Maker in 1997), "Beautiful Son" and "20 Years In The Dakota", written by Love, Eric Erlandson and Patty Schemel; and "Drown Soda", the only case on the album of a song credited to a full Hole line-up (Love, Erlandson, Jill Emery and Caroline Rue). Kurt Cobain (uncredited) plays bass on "Miss World".

The liner notes explain that the compilation was pieced together to show Hole's progression from the punkier Pretty on the Inside (1991) to their grungier Live Through This (1994).

Celebrity Skin (1998)

http://images.uulyrics.com/cover/h/hole/album-celebrity-skin.jpg

Celebrity Skin is the third studio album by the American rock band Hole, released worldwide by Geffen Records on September 7, 1998 and one day later in the United States. Similarly to vocalist and guitarist Courtney Love's refined image during this era, the sound of the album itself moved away from Hole's harder alternative rock past and toward a cleaner and more radio friendly pop rock format. It was Hole's most commercially succesful album, garnering them a #1 hit single on the Modern Rock Tracks chart with the title track. Critical reaction to the album was largely positive, though not as universally so as the band's previous record, Live Through This.

Courtney Love penned all of the lyrics and the music was written by the band. Some songs were co-authored by Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. The studio work took almost a year and a half, due to Love's rising movie career,[citation needed] fruitless recording attempts in New Orleans and Nashville in 1997, Corgan's involvement in songwriting and the actual album sessions, between Los Angeles, New York City, London and Miami.

Track List

1. "Celebrity Skin" (Love, Erlandson, Corgan) – 2:42
2. "Awful" (Love, Erlandson, Auf der Maur, Schemel) – 3:16
3. "Hit So Hard" (Love, Erlandson, Corgan) – 4:00
4. "Malibu" (Love, Erlandson, Corgan) – 3:50
5. "Reasons to Be Beautiful" (Love, Erlandson, Auf der Maur, Caffey, Zadorozny) – 5:19
6. "Dying" (Love, Corgan, Erlandson) – 3:44
7. "Use Once & Destroy" (Love, Erlandson, Auf der Maur, Schemel) – 5:04
8. "Northern Star" (Love, Erlandson) – 4:58
9. "Boys on the Radio" (Love, Erlandson, Auf der Maur) – 5:09
10. "Heaven Tonight" (Love, Erlandson) – 3:31
11. "Playing Your Song" (Love, Erlandson) – 3:21
12. "Petals" (Love, Erlandson, Corgan) – 5:29
