Dwight Yorke, the former Manchester United forward whose goals led the club to 1999 treble glory, has retired from football at the age of 37 and intends to become a coach. He is to take up the post of assistant manager of the Trinidad and Tobago national team as a first step into coaching. Yorke’s contract with Sunderland – his final club – was not renewed at the end of last season.

“It’s time to hang up my boots,” said the striker who scored 64 goals in 151 appearances for United.

“While I’m still in great shape, I’m not getting any younger. I’ve had the time of my life. I hope people will say that I played the game in the right way with a smile on my face.

“I’ve been blessed really. I’ve played alongside some of the greatest players the Premier League has ever seen in Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Peter Schmeichel, and played for the greatest manager in Alex Ferguson.”

Yorke eventually fell out with Sir Alex Ferguson over the player’s excessive lifestyle, but the player contributed fully to one of the most successful periods in United’s history between 1998 and 2002. In the player’s first three seasons the club won an unprecedented three Premier League trophies in a row and the 1999 European Cup.

It was Yorke’s partnership with Andy Cole that the Trinidad and Tobago international will be best remembered for. Yorke finished top scorer in the 1999 season and the combination proved devastating. Famously the pair one-two’ed its way through the Barcelona defence on way to United’s 3-3 draw in the Noup Camp.

It was a great return for Yorke, the man from the tiny island, who arrived at Old Trafford after nearly 10 years at Aston Villa. Despite leaving the club for United in a contentious £12.6 million deal – and later playing for Birmingham City – Yorke is still held in high esteem at Villa Park as one of their greatest ever players. So he should be. Yorke has always been the player with a smile on his face. Talented but also very much a man of the people.

Yorke’s off-the-field activities and the arrival of Ruud van Nistelrooy put paid to his United career after four seasons. The forward’s relationship with ‘model’ Jordan, with whom he had a son, was played out in the public through the tabloids – a scenario that Ferguson is never happy with.

The player was eventually sold for £2 million to Blackburn in the summer of 2002 but it was a sad end to a wonderful, if short, United career. He played out his days with Blackburn, Birmingham, Sydney FC and then Sunderland – reinventing himself as a deep lying midfielder late in his career.

But for such patriotic man it is perhaps the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany that was Yorke’s proudest moment. He captained the tiny Trinidad and Tobago to thier first tournament.

“I’ll always count myself lucky,” said Yorke.

“I was a boy on a beach from a little Caribbean island that got the chance to fulfil his dream of winning trophies at the highest level and captaining his country in their first ever World Cup Finals.”

Manchester United terancam sanksi oleh FIFA. Fiorentina telah siap mengajukan komplain kepada Manchester United atas transfer Michele Fornasier dari klub Seri A Fiorentina.

Setelah sebelumnya Chelsea terkena sanksi oleh FIFA dan Manchester City baru saja mendapatkan komplain dari Rennes, kini MU harus bersiap-siap menghadapi ancaman serupa.

Rooney (England - Slovenia 2-1): Missed 3 good chances and one chance rattled the post and was awarded a shocking penalty for fouling THEIR player, I wasn't impressed at Mr Honest ;).
-Scored against Croatia thanks to the GK's mistake and set up Gerrard's 4th in a 5-1 win playing the full 90 mins.
Carrick (England - Slovenia 2-1): Came on at HT and looked poor. Wasn't involved against the Croats.
Foster- unused in the friendly and against Croatia. Appears to be #3 in the peaking order.
Brown- unused sub twice although his "replacement" Glen Johnson was at fault for two goals against two different teams.
Captain Fletcher (and Scotland) lost to Macedonia 2-0 and 1-0 to Holland. Looked particularly poor against Macedonia but was better against Holland. Van Persie was yellow carded for a bad tackle on him although he also dished out some rought treatment. Scotland's qualfying hopes all but over.
Evans (Poland - NI 1-1): Cleared shot off line. At fault for first goal conceded against Slovakia in a 2-0 defeat. NI unlikely to qualify.
O'Shea (Cyprus - Ireland 1-2): Injured.
Gibson- unused sub against Cyprus but played in a friendly match against SA in a 1-0 win.

Evra (France - Romania 1-1): Looked good. Played 90 mins against Serbia in another 1-1. Currently in play offs?
Park (South Korea 3 - Australia 1): Assist for the third.
Vidic- played two 90 mins against Austrai and France. Although Serbia failed to qualify tonight as they didn't beat France, they are 4 points clear.
Tosic- was an unused sub against France.
Valencia (Colombia - Ecuador 2-0): Scored and assisted Ecuador in a 3-1 win over Bolivia.
Berbatov (Bulgaria - Montenegro 4-1): Three assists and won a penalty he scored himself. Typical Berba as he then had a woeful match against Italy typifying his hot and cold performances.
Nani (Denmark - Portugal 1-1): Got a potentially crucial assist from a corner but only played 8 mins against Hungary and had a chance to score but missed in a 1-0 win.

Welbeck- came on as a sub and was then subbed against Greece.
Macheda- played the last 15 mins in a defeat to Wales but was not involved in the next match due to not being "mature" enough.

Sir Alex Ferguson has leapt to the defence of Manchester United's signing of young players and insisted it would be 'crazy' to even contemplate paying parents.

United were accused by the president of French club Le Havre, Jean-Pierre Louvel, of offering the parents of 16-year-old Paul Pogba a house and £170,000 in cash.

Chelsea have been banned from making signings for two transfer windows for inducing a teenager to break his contract with another French club, Lens, and a number of other complaints against English clubs have since been made.

Apart from the Pogba case, Fiorentina have written to FIFA over United's swoop for 16-year-old Italian defender Michele Fornasier, though a formal investigation has yet to be launched.

'There has been a lot of jumping on the bandwagon of course but I can assure you that Manchester United have behaved absolutely correctly in all their dealings with young players and their parents,' he said.

'There has never been a case, ever, that we have paid parents. It would be crazy to even contemplate that because it would be the biggest headache you could ever have, paying a parent.

'This was levelled [at us] by some frustrated director at the French club and he's now going to have to retract.

'We do it impeccably. They were always going to bring Manchester United into it because they are the biggest club, but without any foundation, without any knowledge of the situation whatsoever.

'What other clubs do is subject to a lot of controversy at the moment but I'm confident at our own club.'

Darren Barr Fletcher has come a long way since FA rules precluded Sir Alex Ferguson from including him in United’s squad for the Premier League trip to Aston Villa in May 2000. Fletcher, gangly 16-year-old schoolboy, the next great creative talent to follow David Beckham and Paul Scholes into United’s midfield. Nearly a decade later and Fletcher has transformed himself into the vital destructive heartbeat of the United side. No longer the love that dare not speak its name.

Injuries meant that Fletcher wasn’t able to make his full United début until 2003, making 35 appearances in the following season. Through the following four seasons Fletcher flitted in and out of the United side, often appearing out of position on the right flank. Fans, unconvinced, cruelly dubbed the Dalkeith-born Scot The Scottish Player. Roy Keane went further and singled out Fletcher in his now infamous 2005 MUTV putdown: “I can’t understand why people in Scotland rave about Darren Fletcher.”

The signatures of Anderson and Owen Hargreaves in the summer of 2007 came close to ending Fletcher’s time at the club. Fletcher’s loyalty to United and Sir Alex tested by years of warming the bench. Few fans would have blamed him for leaving, or indeed shed many tears.

But injuries to Hargreaves and the inconsistent form of Anderson have offered Fletcher a chance in his favoured central midfield role. How the Scot has taken it – Fletcher made 42 appearances in all competitions last season and is now almost always picked for the biggest games. That the Scot missed last season’s Champions League final was not only desperately unlucky for the player, but for the team too.

“People ask me why I do well in those games but I don’t think I do anything differently,” Fletcher told The Daily Mail in an interview earlier this season. “I think I always play like that but it is only when you are up against the best teams that people notice the work being done in midfield.”

From gangly teenager, to midfielder pariah, to an “automatic pick,” according to United legend Paddy Crerand. Such is Fletcher’s current form that Owen Hargreaves will struggle to get back into the United side should he ever return from fitness.

“For the big games I think the manager would pick Fletcher, he’d be first on the team sheet. Darren has made the point that he wants to be the number one choice in midfield. And he’s playing well enough to be number one. I almost don’t need to make the point for him, he’s making a strong enough case himself.”

Indeed, Fletcher has started the new season in outstanding form with man-of-the-match performances against both Wigan Athletic and Arsenal. “He’s been playing like that for quite a few years now. I think the fans are starting to appreciate him, that’s the only difference,” says Crerrand.

While fans have long underestimated the merits of Fletcher’s passing, the Scot was too often used out of position on the right flank, without the requisite pace or skills to make the best of the role. When Fletcher did get the chance to play in central midfield, he often played as if he had yet to find his true vocation. Fletcher the gifted teenager took time to mature into the midfield terrier of his mid-20s.

Crerand goes further, claiming that United fans unfairly placed Fletcher alongside the greats of United’s midfield of the early naughties.

“For a long time Darren was a scapegoat. When he came through he played alongside Roy Keane and Paul Scholes and there aren’t many players in English football, never mind for United, who’ve been as good as those two,” argues fellow Scot Crerand.

“He’s a tremendous passer and doesn’t get the credit for that sometimes. All you hear is that he gets in at people. But he is enthusiastic and whole-hearted, and fans love that,” said Crerrand.

Indeed they do and Fletcher is winning over more by the week. Fletcher puts his improved performances down to hard work and the right attitude.

“I’m the only one still here from my year group. There were others who could control, pass and shoot the ball as good as me but I think football is played in your head,” Fletcher told The Mail.

“It is the way you deal with everything: being at Manchester United, the expectation, the crowd, the nervousness, all of that pressure. The game is played up there before you go on the pitch, and I had that strength.”

Roy Keane would approve and Fletcher deserves huge credit for his improvement.

CSKA Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev has welcomed reports linking him with a potential move to Manchester United.

Akinfeev, 23, is rumoured to be on United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's radar as he considers a long-term replacement for current number one Edwin van der Sar.

Arsenal and Bayern Munich have also been mentioned as possible suitors for the international keeper, but Akinfeev has admitted a move to Old Trafford would be an appealing proposition.

"CSKA is a great club but every player would love to prove their worth at United," he told The Sun.

Akinfeev has won 35 international caps for Russia and has been part of three Russian Premier League winning sides during his time in Moscow.

Sir Alex admits leaving out Zoran Tosic and Ritchie De Laet from United’s 25-man Champions League squad wasn’t easy.

Neither player – both of whom impressed during pre-season – is eligible to feature in the group stage of the forthcoming campaign, which begins on Tuesday with a tricky fixture in Turkey.

Some papers had suggested Tosic’s exclusion was tantamount to the end of his United career, but Sir Alex was quick to dispel any such rumours.

“It was just a numbers decision,” the manager said. “We have such a massive squad now.

“The difficulty was around what we should do with Owen Hargreaves, whether or not to put him or Zoran in the squad. The other player [who narrowly missed out] was Ritchie De Laet.

“We came down on the side of Hargreaves because, having taken the medical advice, we think he’ll be available for the last three Champions League group-stage games.”

That news, while disappointing for Tosic and De Laet, comes as a big boost for United fans, some of whom had begun to wonder if they’d ever see Hargreaves again in a red shirt.

But the midfielder is due back at Carrington towards the end of September and Sir Alex is confident he’ll have a part to play in the Reds’ quest for European glory.

“He’s such a versatile player who can perform in so many positions, so he could be a very important player for us at that time of the season. That was the reason [we included him ahead of others in the European squad].”

Tosic and De Laet’s exclusions don't mean they won’t be given the chance to shine on other stages; the manager was particularly positive when talking about De Laet and suggested the young Belgian could play in “a lot of league games” this term.

Tottenham's credentials as genuine contenders to break into the top four face a real test as they face Manchester United and Chelsea in back-to-back Premier League matches.

Man Utd of course fear nobody, but even they will have been closely scrutinising the scintillating form Spurs have been in this season.

Manajer Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson tampaknya memupuskan ambisi Wayne Rooney untuk menjadi kapten tim saat mengungkapkan kriteria kapten United.

Menurut Sir Alex, ia lebih memilih kapten berasal dari lini tengah dan lini belakang, dan menjelaskan pengecualian terhadap legenda di Old Trafford Eric Cantona.

Sir Alex Ferguson melihat potensi Luis Fabiano akan mampu membantu Setan Merah meraih gelar Liga Primer.

Manchester United kini menguji Sevilla dengan mengajukan penawaran kepada Luis Fabiano. Klub berjuluk Setan Merah itu berniat memboyong pemain asal Brasil tersebut pada transfer pemain Januari mendatang.

Seperti dilansir laporan The People, manajer Sir Alex Ferguson telah mengagumi penampilan Fabiano di awal musim ini saat ia tampil membela klub maupun negaranya di babak kualifikasi Piala Dunia 2010.

Fergie dilaporkan telah memutuskan untuk menawarkan pemain berusia 28 tahun ini bergabung ke Old Trafford pada Januari mendatang meski Fabiano tak bisa bermain untuk Liga Champions.

Mengutip laporan dari seorang sumber terdekat Fabiano, tabloid Inggris itu menulis penawaran ini berkaitan dengan masa depan Fabiano.

"Luis Fabiano pernah kecewa atas kegagalannya pindah ke AC Milan, dan dia telah memutuskan untuk tidak berbicara seputar masa depannya hingga ada penawaran yang konkret," kata sumber yang tidak disebutkan identitasnya tersebut.

Park Ji-sung's agent claims the midfielder has agreed a new three-year contract at Manchester United.

The South Korean midfielder, who has been in talks with the Red Devils for some time, will now remain with the Red Devils until at least 2012.

Park Ji-sung's agent claims the midfielder has agreed a new three-year contract at Manchester United.

The South Korean midfielder, who has been in talks with the Red Devils for some time, will now remain with the Red Devils until at least 2012.

Park joined United from PSV Eindhoven in 2005 and has been a considerable success during his time in England.

He has become an important cog in the Old Trafford machine, despite finding himself behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo for much of his time at the club.

He became the first Asian player to feature in a UEFA Champions League final when he featured in United's 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in May, while he has been crucial to helping raise the Red Devils' profile in Korea.

Park has now decided to commit his long-term future to Sir Alex Ferguson's side, with his new deal set to take him past his 31st birthday.

"Park and Manchester United have reached an agreement on a three-year deal," Park's agent Kim Jung-Soo told Yonhap news agency.

"The contract will be effective through June 2012."

Manchester United could be undone by the hostile atmosphere when they face Besiktas in Tuesday's Champions League game, according to keeper Rustu Recber.

Former Turkey international Rustu warned last season's runners-up United to beware of the Istanbul atmosphere.

"They are the noisiest, most passionate fans who stay with us for 90 minutes. The noise is incredible," he said.

"It'll be a new experience even for those players who think they've seen it all. Our fans can really make it hell."

United, who lost to Barcelona in last season's final having won the trophy in 2008, will be expecting a good result after hitting form in recent matches.

Besiktas have opened their defence of the Turkish league title with only one win from five matches and were beaten 3-0 at Galatasaray on Saturday.

United's Rio Ferdinand hailed his side's recent displays, which have seen them beat Arsenal 2-1 at home and then win 3-1 away at previously unbeaten Tottenham, after an earlier shock defeat at Burnley.

"We responded in the right manner, getting the ball down and playing some of our best football this season," said Ferdinand.

The defender also hailed Wayne Rooney's form, with the England striker netting six goals in six games for Sir Alex Ferguson's team.

Premier League clubs have voted to introduce new rules to promote youth development and guard clubs from financial meltdown.

From next season, each club must register a squad of 25 players, no more than 17 of whom can be 21 or older without three years of continuous development in the English game.

And, with immediate effect, all 20 clubs must submit their accounts annually to the Premier League to act as an early warning for crises like the recent one at Portsmouth.

The homegrown player rule is intriguing at a time when Chelsea are fighting a transfer ban imposed by FIFA for the illegal recruitment of French teenager Gael Kakuta from Lens. Whether it has any real impact is open to question.

If these rules were in place now, it would force Liverpool to eject a couple of players who rarely feature, like Philipp Degen or Nabil El Zhar, from their squad, but it would have little impact on the players available to Chelsea and Manchester United.

Clubs can also supplement their 25- man squad with a B-list, featuring as many players as they want who were under the age of 21 at the start of the previous January.

A new squad list can be submitted at the end of January after the transfer window. Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, said: ‘It encourages youth development and the promotion of young players, but this is nowhere near a nationality test.

‘Having said that, when you start to put these requirements on players it naturally encourages those developed locally.’

In practice, it may add a further premium to the value of English-trained players and it could tempt more clubs into the market for foreign teenagers, so they can train them within England for three years rather than wait until they are 21.

There is already a problem in youth development at Premier League clubs caused by a progress gap between Under-18 football and the first team. Big clubs with large squads address it by farming players out on loan but, when the new rule comes in, clubs will be tempted to keep those players in reserve to supply B-list back-up.

On the stricter monitoring of accounts, Scudamore says: ‘It is absolutely right the clubs are sustainable. They were there long before the current owners and will be there long afterwards.’

If a club’s finances are not viable, the Premier League have the power to step in and ban them from signing players or improving contracts.

Emmanuel Adebayor is set to be banned for at least three matches for his wild rampage against Arsenal at Easlands.

The Manchester City striker has been charged with violent conduct for scraping his studs down the face of Robin van Persie in the 4-2 victory over the Gunners on Saturday. He is expected to be banned for three matches if found guilty.

Adebayor, who transferred from Arsenal in a £25million move to City this summer, also faces a separate charge of improper conduct for racing down the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans

He has until 6pm on Wednesday to appeal against both charges.

An FA statement read: 'The Football Association today issued two charges against Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor following Saturday’s Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Arsenal.

'Under the fast-track disciplinary process, Adebayor has been charged with violent conduct following an incident with Robin van Persie, which resulted in the Arsenal player receiving facial injuries.

'Referee Mark Clattenburg has advised The FA that he did not see this incident, but has confirmed that had he done so, he would have sent Adebayor off for violent conduct. The player has until 6pm on Wednesday evening to respond to the charge.

'Adebayor has also been charged with improper conduct following his actions when turning and running the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal supporters after scoring.

'The Greater Manchester Police have written to The FA with their views on this incident. A separate date will now be arranged for a commission to consider Adebayor’s goal celebration.

Unless Adebayor can successfully argue his case, he is almost certain not to be available for City at least until their trip to Wigan on October 18.

The FA would then need to set up a disciplinary panel to hear the second case, which could bring anything up to an additional three-match suspension.

Adebayor will hope for leniency in that matter though, given the aggravation he
received from the Arsenal supporters.

Fergie memutuskan menarik Rooney keluar di menit ke-63 dan menggantinya dengan Michael Owen. Rooney jelas tidak senang dengan keputusan tersebut. Mantan bintang Everton itu sempat melampiaskan kekesalan dengan membanting sebelah sepatunya.

Tindakan Rooney sedikit banyak mengingatkan publik pada sikap mantan bintangnya, Cristiano Ronaldo, yang membanting jaket setelah ditarik keluar oleh Fergie pada laga kontra Manchester City, Mei lalu.

Enggan membesar-besarkan masalah, pelatih asal Skotlandia itu langsung menjelaskan tindakan anak asuhnya.

"Kami selalu berpikiran untuk melakukan perubahan di babak kedua. Wayne telah bermain sebagai striker tunggal selama satu jam dan itu selalu menjadi alasan ketika dirinya ditarik keluar," jelas Fergie seperti disitat The Sun.

Valencia - David Silva memang pernah menolak pinangan Manchester United. Namun itu bukan berarti mimpi Silva sudah untuk berseragam 'Setan Merah' sudah berakhir.

Manchester City fans’ favourite, Stephen Ireland, has claimed he grew up as a Manchester United fan and had trials with the club when he was a teenager.

“I didn’t know where I stood at United,” said Ireland. “I was there when I was 15 but I just didn’t like it. Every day there I’d be training with a different bunch of kids. I didn’t know who I was meant to be impressing, who my coaches were and I just felt all over the place. I only met Fergie once. I said ‘hello’ to him one day and he knew straight away that I was Irish. He told me he already had enough Irish players with Roy Keane and Denis Irwin, so I guess that was another hint for me to hit the road. I grew up supporting United, so maybe my expectations were too high when I went there. But as soon as I came to City it felt right and I could see myself being where I am now. The reason that Sir Alex Ferguson didn't spend the £80 million from the Ronaldo sale is that he plans to make a money back offer to Madrid next summer!!! fergie had a feeling that Ronaldo wouldn't settle in Madrid and already siad he'd take him back. Fergie knew that in madrid Ronaldo's ego couldn't cope with being one of many world class superstars instead of being the star at United. Here's a good comarison: In the film "Ocean's 11", Matt Damon (Ronaldo) had to share the limeight, press coverage and adulation with other worldclass stars like brad pitt and George Clooney (Kaka and Cassilias). "A small club with a small mentality" is how Sir Alex Ferguson provocatively dismissed Manchester City ahead of the new season. How City boss Mark Hughes and the blue half of Manchester will relish reminding Ferguson of that quote should they topple the champions on Sunday.

Always a keenly-contested affair, this weekend's derby promises to be the most intriguing for years. City are out of the Premier League starting blocks quicker than ever before and proved against Arsenal last week that they are serious about their intention to shake up the 'big four'.

Manchester United face the renewed prospect of a one-year transfer ban after their attempts to sign teenagers Paul Pogba and Alberto Massacci were referred to FIFA following the refusal of the Italy and France Football Associations to release transfer documents allowing the moves.

And Le Harve, Pogba’s former club, expect FIFA to investigate and repeat the transfer ban they imposed on Chelsea for inducing Gael Kakuta, 16, to breach a contract with Lens and sign for the youth academy.

Le Havre managing director Alain Belsoeur said: ‘The French FA did not deliver the clearance certificate to Manchester United and the English FA, who have turned to FIFA to appeal.

FIFA have to examine the case and we have supplied written answers to their questions regarding the contractual relationship between the player and the club.

‘The Pogba case is very, very similar to the case of Kakuta and I can think of no reason why FIFA’s final decision will be dissimilar.’

Le Havre president Jean-Pierre Louvel, urged to ‘put up or shut up’ by United chief executive David Gill, said: ‘We’ll launch an attack on United, seek sanctions and demand the same ban FIFA gave Chelsea in the transfer market.’

News of the FIFA probe comes a week after Gill’s attack on Le Harve, who have backed down on their allegations that United paid Pogba’s parents, a claim which was denied by Gill.

United threatened legal action when they heard Le Havre had made allegations of inducements and insist they have made no illicit payments, saying they have acted within the rules.

Italian club Empoli have also withheld transfer clearance for Alberto Massacci’s move to United.

However, their case is not as strong because 16-year-olds are not recognised as workers in Italy so they cannot sign a contract.

Empoli director Giuseppe Vitale said: ‘It’s true, we’re trying to block Massacci from playing for United. We are withholding the relevant documents.

‘Why should we hand over his registration after the way United have behaved? I understand Fiorentina are doing the same over Michele Fornasier.’

United spokesman Phil Townsend denied that they had done anything wrong.

‘It is up to FIFA to decide over the question of a contract but we are confident Pogba wasn’t contracted to Le Havre,’ he said. ‘We have acted within the legislation.'
